Do our dogs laugh?

How often have you imagined that your four legged mate is laughing with you. We do tend to treat our dogs as humans and expect human reactions.

The Nobel Prize winning ethnologist, Konrad Lorenz wrote in his book Man Meets Dog:

“…an invitation to play always follows; here the slightly opened jaws which reveal the tongue, and the tilted angle of the mouth which stretches almost from ear to ear give a still stronger impression of laughing. This ‘laughing’ is most often seen in dogs playing with an adored master and which become so excited that they soon start panting”.

You can read about dog’s “laughing”, and more, at Psychology Today’s Canine Corner.

Why Anti-Social? One of my neighbours.

I watched one of my neighbours let his dog out. He crosses the road to the grass area, walks 10 metres back and forth on the pavement waiting until his dog does its business, on the grass next to the pavement, the crosses back to his house.

I ask him why he didn’t clean it up, he ignores me. I repeat the question. He looks a tad angry and tells me I should pay more attention to the media as the legislation has been repealed, it’s no longer compulsory to clean up. (Should this make a difference?) At which I point out that we should inform Holland’s largest newspaper as they had, only
two days earlier, done a large article on the fact that people, dog-owners, ignore the current legislation.

As he’s new to the street I pointed out that he’s a welcome addition to he neighbourhood. (Tinge with irony.)

I realized that his “attack” was meant to confuse my, tell me an untruth and I’ll have doubts.

Anyway to help him I print out the relevant rules and the current fines and pop the sheets through his letter box. That’s what neighbours are for.

Do you have anti-social neighbours? Tell us about them.

The amusing myth of dry dog turds!

I am always amused by the dog owners who try to convince me that, “My dog’s faeces is always dry and clean so when I remove it (using the primitive hand-in-bag method – Ed) no traces remain.” They’re not lying as such, they believe it but they are wrong!

Oh Yes! Do Not Forget The Daisy Dog Net

The dangers of dog faeces for our children!

If people don’t clean up after their dog they are causing a potentially dangerous situation. Even the “bag-in-hand” solution doesn’t leave a clean ground behind. Danger for your kids via their football, their toys, their curiosity; beware!

Here is an extract from the site http://kidshealth.org

Toxocariasis is an illness that is caused by Toxocara worms that can live in the intestines of dogs and cats. The eggs from the worms are passed to humans through the feces of dogs and cats. People who do not wash their hands frequently may accidentally eat the tiny eggs of these worms, which then hatch and develop in the digestive system. Babies and younger children who often put things in their mouths are particularly at risk of getting toxocariasis.
